Astrovirus transmission occurs through the fecal-oral route usually by person-to-person contacts, but also by fomites and contaminated food and water.  The person-to-person fecal-oral mode of transmission is most often seen in nosocomial, day-care center, and family outbreaks.  Reports of transmission via contaminated water and food such as oysters have been reported also.
