CDC Daily Update - terrific resource for
aidsnews junkies!
The CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse maintains a read-only mailing list for
individuals who wish to receive AIDS-related documents from CDC,
including
the AIDS Daily Summary, selected Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report
articles, CDC National AIDS Hotline Training Bulletins, and factsheets.
The listserv also distributes press releases from other Public Health
Service agencies such as the National Institutes of Health. To
subscribe,
Internet users should send the message

Issues in HIV (crica 1997)
Biological Issues
- gp41 conformational change is involved in cell
fusion
- HIV infected cells dramatically down-regulate the
expression of HLA class 1 antigens on the cell surface. This is
primarily mediated through the expression of nef
- After an initial peak in viral replication, viral load
stabilizes to a so-called set point that differs from one
individual to another.
- Evidence of high levels of on-going viral replication during
clinically asymptomatic period
- Discovery of secondary receptors - CXCR4 (fusin), CCR5 (CKR5), and
possibly CCR3
- Chemokine receptor mutations as a possible source of HIV
resistance
- nef deleted strains as a possible explanation for LT
nonprogression
- Evidence of viral progression from NSI to SI strains
- Evidence that chimps progress to end-stage disease
- HHV-8 as causative agent of KS
- Post-exposure prophylaxis for sexual and IDU exposure
Social Issues
- Greater acceptance of HIV as exemplified by Magic
Johnson's second
return to basketball
Diagnostic issues:
- Viral load as a measure of prognosis
- Branch DNA as a quantitative measure of viral load
- More sensitive tests that can measure as few as 20 copies of
HIV per milliliter of blood - Brain Conway (Vancouver)
- Home testing kits
Treatment issues:
- 11 antiretroviral drugs approved:
- 5 nucleoside analogs RT inhibitors
- 2 nonnucleoside analog RT inhibitors
- 4 protease inhibitors
- Effectiveness of multidrug regimens, especially when initiated early
in the drug naive patient
(Possibility of reducing the serum viral load to unmeasurably low levels)
- Emergence of multidrug resistance
Jon Cohen - Science 7/4/97 p 32
- Treatment of concurrent STDs is a highly effective mechanism for
decreasing the viral load in semen.
- Debate over the relationship between "viral elimination" and "cure"
- Evidence that immune system may be able to (at least partially)
reconstitute itself - Brigitte Autran (Paris)
Vaccination issues
- President Clinton announces ten year goal to find a vaccine for HIV
(May 19, 1997)
- Controversy on the possibility of human testing of live attenuated
vaccine candidates: delta nef, delta three
