I was somewhat disappointed to learn that daisy does not describe a discrete thing.
It refers to a somewhat arbitrary subset of plants in the Asteraceae family.
On the other hand, I was heartened to learn that the etymology refers to "day's eye".
Although this refers to the diurnal opening and closing of the common daisy, Bellis perennis,
one could also imagine the yellow and white being the happy face of daytime.
